The Antithesis to Burnout
Reading time: approx. 1 minute
Here's what Brad Stulberg, an expert on healthy and sustainable performance, has to say about a desirable state he calls 'harmonious passion' in contrast to burnout:
'Harmonious passion requires three main things. This has been studied for over 45 years and the evidence is highly replicable across diverse fields of practice:
1) Autonomy: the ability to have significant control over one's work.
2) Mastery: the ability to see improvement and progression in one's craft.
3) Belonging or relatedness: a feeling of connection and community.'
When you are dealing with burnout, there are many things that you can do to get better. For instance, you might want to create a better work-life balance, implement a regular relaxation and/or meditation practice into your daily routine, make sure your career mirrors your values to the greatest possible extent, and so on. But before you do any of that, it makes sense to evaluate the above and see whether there is room for positive adjustments. Like this, chances are high that you are tackling the problem at one of its roots.
